Libraries which provide environmental, economic, social sustainability and support services towards sustainable development, are characterized as sustainable libraries. Green libraries should have a clear sustainability framework which includes green buildings and equipment, sustainable economy, social sustainability, environmental management, commitment to general environmental goals and programs. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action. SDGs were used by both academic and municipal libraries to achieve sustainable development. More specifically, libraries offer a wide range of products and services, while adopting practices based on sustainable development goals. As the International Federation of Librarians' Associations and Institutions IFLA states, most existing activities, projects and programs delivered by libraries worldwide can relate to one or more of SDGs.In recent years, there has been an effort to adopt these practices by Greek and Cypriot academic libraries as well, which is gradually intensifying.
This paper aims to investigate the adoption, implementation, and support of SDGs by Greek and Cypriot academic libraries. An attempt is made to describe the most basic sustainable development goals, which are implemented in academic libraries in Greece and Cyprus - with the aim of identifying the problems they face in order to implement those goals - the recording of proposals for improving the implementation of the sustainable development goals they have chosen to succeed as well as finding possible solutions to problems.
Reference is also made to corresponding international practices of academic libraries and the results of relevant research conducted are presented. An important parameter is the continuous feedback from the staff of academic libraries with experiences and data to facilitate and improve the implementation of sustainable development goals. This can additionally be combined with the cooperation of academic and municipal libraries that undertake relevant actions respectively.
