The main purpose of this paper is to present the local developments of Open Science as well as the actions that are expected to take place, with libraries, mainly academic ones, playing an important and leading role. Both in the field of education and the dissemination of know-how but also as the organizations that maintain and manage the Institutional repositories, which means an important part of the Open Access  infrastructure that usually hosts the research productivity of their academic communities, libraries are pivotal organizations for the implementation of these policies.

With the adoption of the revised "National Policy of the Republic of Cyprus for Open Science Practices" approved by the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus on the 27th of May 2022 the national field of research is expected to change in a decisive way as practices from the various aspects encompassed by the term Open Science. Among them are terms such as the Openness of research publications and data, Citizen Science, Open peer review, open licenses, FAIR principles, etc

The new policy, revises the existing "National Policy on Open Access to Scientific Information in the Republic of Cyprus" (2016), and will start to be implemented in November 2022, was drawn up on the initiative of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy and is the result of cooperation between the involved local bodies of the Research and Innovation ecosystem, the Informal Advisory Group for Open Science in Cyprus and the OpenAIRE National Open Access Desk (University of Cyprus Library - OpenAIRE NOAD).

Its implementation is expected to strengthen the efforts of dissemination and exploitation of the country's research outputs, aligning national efforts with the relevant European principles and policies.

Libraries undoubtedly are expected to play a key role in this challenge of research cultural change by leveraging their experience, capabilities, and expertise.
