Citizen Science and the Role of Academic Libraries
Session hours: 19/10/2022 (16:00-18:00)

Citizen Science is one of the main pillars of Open Science where citizens, people without formal professional experience on scientific processes, participate in various stages of an open access research.

Citizen Science not only helps citizens engage actively by gathering, recording, analyzing and commenting on data but it also helps them to perceive the importance of research and the value and progress of science.

The role of the academic library can be of great importance, as a meeting point for academic staff, researchers and citizens actively participating in the research process.

Libraries around the world have developed CS services to provide knowledge, information, data collection etc, while at the same time, they support research communities, by developing systems such as data repositories, protocols, CS tools etc. to maintain results for a long term.

The 2-hour workshop “Citizen Science and the role of Academic Libraries” is organized as part of the CEOS_SE programme (Citizen-enhanced open science in Southeastern Europe Higher Education knowledge hubs / Erasmus+, Key Action 2), by the Library and Information Center of the University of Patras (CEOS_SE partner) and aims to train academic librarians on the basic features of CS. Participants will learn the principles of CS and how it relates to Open Science, get informed on libraries’ good practices and examples and how to create a supportive network of partners.
